Newsom announces special election date for Kevin McCarthy’s House seat

Primary to take place on 19 March for 20th congressional district in Bakersfield, vacant after former House speaker’s resignation

California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has set a mid-March special election date to fill the US House seat vacated by the former speaker Kevin McCarthy.

In a statement, Newsom set the 19 March primary date for the 20th congressional district contest. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two vote-getters would advance to a 21 May matchup to fill the seat.
