I fear the rise of anti-feminist extremism<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2015\/jun\/08\/argentina-murder-women-gender-violence-protest\">femicide of 14-year-old Chiara Paez<\/a>, by her boyfriend, in May 2015 provoked national outrage in Argentina. \u201cAre we not going to do anything?\u201d asked journalist Marcela Ojeda. And we did something. On 3 June, the first Ni Una Menos (Not One Less) women\u2019s march against femicide took place.<\/p>\n<p>The march awakened a new global awareness in the fight against gender violence. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2020\/jun\/04\/niunamenos-five-years-on-latin-america-as-deadly-as-ever-for-women-say-activists\">Ni Una Menos<\/a> movement was replicated in Peru, Uruguay, Italy and Germany, among other places. In Brazil and Mexico, protests and the hashtag #MiPrimerAcoso (\u201cmy first harassment\u201d) took off.<\/p>\n<p>The west followed suit. In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/oct\/20\/women-worldwide-use-hashtag-metoo-against-sexual-harassment\">#MeToo<\/a> exploded, two years after Ni Una Menos. Argentina\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/msmagazine.com\/2018\/06\/20\/inside-argentinas-revolution-daughters\/\">revolution of the daughters<\/a>\u201d learned its own resistance from the Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, their search for their children and grandchildren who were kidnapped by the dictatorship that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, and their fight for human rights against that regime.
