{"id":282,"date":"2023-12-29T03:49:28","date_gmt":"2023-12-29T03:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news2shorts.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/29\/california-blue-states-side-with-biden-admin-after-social-media-censorship-slap\/"},"modified":"2023-12-29T03:49:28","modified_gmt":"2023-12-29T03:49:28","slug":"california-blue-states-side-with-biden-admin-after-social-media-censorship-slap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news2shorts.com\/index.php\/2023\/12\/29\/california-blue-states-side-with-biden-admin-after-social-media-censorship-slap\/","title":{"rendered":"California, blue states side with Biden admin after social media censorship slap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The state of California is leading a charge of 23 Democrat-led states arguing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/judiciary\/supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Supreme Court<\/a> should overturn a &#8220;sweeping&#8221; decision that banned the government from coordinating with social media companies to censor Americans.<\/p>\n<p>In a brief submitted to the high court, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and his blue state colleagues support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/justice-department\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Biden&#8217;s Justice Department<\/a> in arguing the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit&#8217;s &#8220;sweeping&#8221; decision in the case of Missouri v. Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That case stems from a lawsuit brought by Republicans in Missouri and Louisiana that accused high-ranking government officials of working with giant social media companies to censor speech on topics that included Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop, COVID-19 origins and the efficacy of face masks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 5th Circuit ruled administration officials &#8220;likely violated&#8221; the First Amendment and issued a preliminary injunction banning the government from communicating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/tech\/topics\/big-tech-backlash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Tech platforms<\/a> about user content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/biden-agency-likely-violated-free-speech-by-working-with-big-tech-to-censor-election-content-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BIDEN AGENCY &#8216;LIKELY&#8217; VIOLATED FREE SPEECH BY WORKING WITH BIG TECH TO CENSOR ELECTION CONTENT: COURT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bonta argued to the high court that if the decision is upheld, it &#8220;could chill the ability of government\u00a0agencies\u00a0to engage productively with\u00a0the private sector to protect the public online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Social media\u00a0is a daily source\u00a0for news and information across the country,&#8221;\u00a0Bonta said in a press release<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Fifth Circuit\u2019s decision, which blocks virtually any outreach to social media platforms about content moderation by numerous federal government agencies and officials,\u00a0is extraordinarily sweeping and threatens efforts to address threats to public health and safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fbi-weekly-big-tech-ahead-2020-election-agent-testifies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FBI MET WEEKLY WITH BIG TECH AHEAD OF THE 2020 ELECTION, AGENT TESTIFIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Judge Terry A. Doughty ruled in a July 4 order that if the allegations made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/elections\/republicans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Republican AGs<\/a> were true, &#8220;the present case arguably involves the most massive attack against free speech in United States\u2019 history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In their attempts to suppress alleged disinformation, the Federal Government, and particularly the Defendants named here, are alleged to have blatantly ignored the First Amendment\u2019s right to free speech,&#8221; Doughty said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/bidens-justice-department-fight-court-order-blocking-government-censorship-social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BIDEN DOJ TO FIGHT COURT ORDER THAT BLOCKED FEDS FROM COLLUDING WITH BIG TECH TO CENSOR SPEECH<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But Bonta and his colleagues argued that &#8220;maintaining open lines of communication between the government and social-media companies on topics such as extremist violence, child safety, and consumer protection is mutually beneficial, furthers the public interest, and fully comports with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/personal-freedoms\/first-amendment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First Amendment<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The AGs argued the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/judiciary\/federal-courts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5th Circuit&#8217;s decision<\/a> didn&#8217;t properly assess how helpful the government can be to social media platforms in addressing consumer fraud schemes and other related concerns.
