On Tuesday, we shut down Constitution Avenue in Washington DC, demanding that Joe Biden<\/a> publish the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and explicitly codify sex equality for women and queer people in the US constitution. The ERA can protect women\u2019s and LGBTQ+ rights under a second Trump administration<\/a>. That\u2019s why our generation has taken up the 101-year-long struggle for constitutional sex equality.<\/p>\n The ERA consists of 24 simple words: \u201cEquality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.\u201d If published \u2013 legal terminology for \u201cadded to the constitution\u201d \u2013 the ERA would put an end to legalized sex discrimination. It has met both requirements for publication in the US constitution: the ERA passed both chambers of Congress with more than a two-thirds majority in 1972, and in 2020, Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify the ERA.
