Here\u2019s how to get really radical | Finn Mackay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The problem with the 4B movement is that it plays into the idea that sex is labour: work women do for men<\/p>\n<p>Since Trump\u2019s election win in the US, the idea of a \u201csex strike\u201d, linked to a form of women\u2019s activism that began in South Korea, has taken hold on social media. Like many things that become a mainstream buzzword, it is in fact about much more than the literal meaning of those words.<\/p>\n<p>This iteration of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/15\/4b-south-korea-feminist-movement-donald-trump-election-backlash\">4B movement<\/a>\u201d is giving a voice and useful banner to women\u2019s fear and rage across a nation that is increasingly refusing to provide basic reproductive rights and healthcare. Women are understandably scared about the consequences of unplanned pregnancy or pregnancy complications after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/24\/roe-v-wade-overturned-abortion-summary-supreme-court\">repeal of Roe v Wade<\/a>. In addition, the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2024\/feb\/01\/gen-z-boys-and-men-more-likely-than-baby-boomers-to-believe-feminism-harmful-says-poll\">attitude gap<\/a> between young adult women and men \u2013 that has seen young men move to the political right, while young women have remained largely more liberal \u2013 is no doubt also adding to what is being labelled by policy experts as a fertility crisis, but which is, in fact, a crisis in women\u2019s lack of choice.<\/p>\n<p>Finn Mackay is the author of Female Masculinities and the Gender Wars, and a senior lecturer in sociology at the University of the West of England in Bristol<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article?
