Reporting on the rise of anti-Muslim<\/a> hostility across Europe means repeatedly hearing generalisations about Europe\u2019s 25 million Muslims<\/a>. We are \u2013 all of us \u2013 too religious, easily drawn to extremism and terrorism,<\/a> we live in parallel societies<\/a> and Muslim women, especially those who wear the hijab, are victims of fanatical patriarchal oppression or foot soldiers in a drive to replace<\/a> indigenous white Europeans.<\/p>\n Again and again, European governments instruct us to integrate: come in, step out of the shadows and join the sunny European mainstream. We should be less \u201cforeign\u201d, more European, adopt \u201cEuropean values\u201d (just which ones is left unclear, but drinking beer and eating pork<\/a> seem to be among them), get an education and then \u2013 and only then \u2013 actively participate in the political, economic and social life of our \u201chost societies\u201d which, according to Hungary\u2019s Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>, are purely Christian.<\/p>\n Shada Islam is a Brussels-based commentator on EU affairs.
