Civil rights advocates across the US have long fought to free people from their criminal records<\/a>, with campaigns to expunge old cases and keep people\u2019s past arrests private when they apply for jobs and housing.<\/p>\n The efforts are critical, as more than<\/a> 70 million Americans have<\/a> prior convictions or arrests \u2013 roughly one in three<\/a> adults.
