Israel has not achieved its principal war aim, as defined by its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu: the total elimination of Hamas. Nor has Hamas achieved its objective: the destruction of Israel. The leaders responsible for the 7 October 2023 terrorist atrocities are dead. The organisation\u2019s capabilities are severely reduced. But it has survived \u2013 which its supporters claim is a victory for Palestinian <em>sumud<\/em> (steadfastness).<\/p>\n<p>Most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/16\/families-hostages-gaza-agony-ceasefire-delays\">98 remaining Israeli hostages<\/a>, alive and dead, will not be freed in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/15\/gaza-ceasefire-deal-what-we-know-so-far\">first phase of the ceasefire<\/a>, which is to last for six weeks. There is no agreed \u201cday after\u201d strategy for devastated Gaza, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jan\/15\/the-devastating-impact-of-15-months-of-war-on-gaza\">nearly 47,000 Palestinians have died<\/a> and where the hungry and mostly homeless residents exist in a state of near-anarchy, plagued by criminal gangs.
