Vice-president casts tie-breaking vote for Fox News host despite allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse<\/p>\n
Pete Hegseth, the former Fox News personality and rightwing commentator who has said women should not serve in combat roles, recommended the military purge generals and faced allegations of sexual assault and alcoholism,<\/a> has been confirmed as secretary of defense in the Senate by a tie-breaking vote from Vice-president JD Vance.<\/p>\n Almost the entire Republican conference supported Hegseth\u2019s nomination while every Senate Democrat voted against his confirmation, resulting in a 50-50 vote. Three Republican senators \u2013 Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska \u2013 opposed Hegseth\u2019s nomination.
