Global markets tumbled early on Monday in reaction to Donald Trump\u2019s steep trade tariffs<\/a> imposed on Canada, Mexico and China, which a Wall Street Journal<\/a> editorial blasted as \u201cthe dumbest trade war in history\u201d.<\/p>\n What did Trump say about the impact on Americans?<\/strong> He acknowledged the tariffs may cause \u201cshort-term\u201d pain. Economists point out that a tariff is a regressive tax.<\/p>\n How are markets reacting?<\/strong> In the US, S&P 500 futures fell 1.6% and Nasdaq futures slumped 2.2%<\/a>.
