Their grudging experiment with limited democracy reached its end when Aung San Suu\u00a0Kyi\u2019s party won a landslide second election victory \u2013\u00a0prompting the ousting and imprisonment of the National League for Democracy (NLD) leader and her\u00a0colleagues in February 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2025\/jan\/31\/myanmar-military-coup-anniversary\">Four years on<\/a>, resistance has flourished. A study by the BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c390ndrny17o\">estimates<\/a> that the junta controls only 21% of Myanmar\u2019s territory as it battles People\u2019s Defence Force units set up by the national unity government formed from the NLD\u2019s remnants, as well as the ethnic armed groups that have long fought Naypyidaw. More than 4\u00a0million people are displaced and half the population has been forced into poverty. Less than half has access to electricity. The UN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undp.org\/asia-pacific\/publications\/rakhine-a-famine-in-the-making\">says<\/a> Rakhine state is at imminent risk of acute famine and Rohingya Muslims there are particularly vulnerable, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2024\/10\/myanmar-bangladesh-rohingya-community-facing-gravest-threats-since-2017\/\">trapped<\/a> between the military \u2013 which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/article\/2024\/may\/14\/rohingya-being-forcibly-conscripted-in-battle-between-myanmar-and-rebels\">forcibly conscripted<\/a> men \u2013 and the Arakan Army, which accuses them of siding with the junta.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/feb\/04\/the-guardian-view-on-myanmar-four-years-on-the-army-unleashed-terror-but-the-people-are-defiant\">Continue reading&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The junta\u2019s brutality has failed to secure victory in the civil war, but is devastating the country Myanmar\u2019s coup must have looked like an easy win to the generals, given their long record of crushing dissent.
