Less than two weeks after Donald Trump berated Volodymyr Zelenskyy, ejected him from the White House and cut off Ukraine\u2019s support, he U-turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/12\/russia-demands-details-from-before-commits-to-ukraine-ceasefire\">threaten<\/a> financial measures \u201cthat would be very bad for Russia\u201d if it did not reach a deal with Kyiv. Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/11\/ukraine-agrees-to-30-day-ceasefire-as-us-prepares-to-lift-military-aid-restrictions\">acceptance of a 30-day ceasefire proposal<\/a>, building on its own suggestion of\u00a0a\u00a0halt in air and maritime conflict, threw the onus\u00a0on\u00a0Moscow. On Thursday, Vladimir Putin claimed to support the idea in theory \u2013 but warned of \u201cserious\u00a0issues\u201d to address.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s agreement prompted the resumption of US intelligence sharing and military aid, which may well have been Kyiv\u2019s primary aim. Mr Trump would like to take the credit \u2013 and perhaps aspires to a Nobel prize \u2013 for a peace deal. Mr Trump, who was hosting Nato\u2019s secretary general, Mark Rutte, described the Russian president\u2019s remarks as \u201cvery promising\u201d albeit not \u201ccomplete\u201d. Even if he outsources the patience and focus required to reach an agreement, it is clear that he has no interest in the injustice or illegality of the invasion, that his sympathies lie with Mr Putin, and that he bears a deep grudge against Mr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article?
