All 40 illegal migrants held at the Guant\u00e1namo Bay<\/a> U.S. naval base in Cuba have been sent back to the United States and are now being held in Louisiana, two U.S. defense officials told Fox News.<\/p>\n

The group\u00a0includes 23 “high-threat\u00a0illegal\u00a0aliens” who were\u00a0held\u00a0at the detention facility on base and 17\u00a0migrants\u00a0who were\u00a0held\u00a0at the migrant operations center on base.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0illegal migrants\u00a0were transported to Louisiana via Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aircraft and there are currently no\u00a0migrants\u00a0being\u00a0held\u00a0at the base and no flights scheduled\u00a0to\u00a0arrive with more\u00a0migrants, the officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The U.S. defense officials were not\u00a0told why the 40\u00a0migrants\u00a0were\u00a0sent\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0United\u00a0States, and Homeland Security and ICE\u00a0have\u00a0not yet responded\u00a0to\u00a0any\u00a0inquiries about why they were\u00a0sent\u00a0back\u00a0and where in\u00a0Louisiana they are being\u00a0held.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is unclear if the U.S. will continue\u00a0to\u00a0hold\u00a0migrants\u00a0at the base, commonly known as “Gitmo.” None of the 195 tents that were set up\u00a0to\u00a0hold\u00a0migrants\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0used because they do not meet ICE standards, according\u00a0to\u00a0several U.S. defense officials, such as having air conditioning and other amenities.<\/p>\n

In late January, President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a> instructed the Pentagon to prepare 30,000 beds at the base to house “criminal illegal aliens” who pose a threat to the American public, adding that putting them there would ensure they do not come back. The president said the move would bring the U.S. one step closer to “eradicating the scourge” of migrant crime in communities, once and for all.<\/p>\n

But the operation\u00a0to\u00a0build more tents was halted\u00a0back\u00a0in\u00a0February, just several weeks after it started.<\/p>\n

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited the base in late February and met with troops serving there<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The 45-square-mile base, located about 430 miles southeast of Miami, is best known for detaining terrorism suspects, including those behind the\u00a0Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.<\/a> It’s been leased from Cuba since 1903 and serves as a key operational and logistics hub for maritime security, humanitarian assistance and joint operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

News of the migrants being sent to Louisiana comes\u00a0as President Donald Trump\u00a0is reportedly expected to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798<\/a> in an effort to pave the way for faster mass deportations of illegal immigrants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump will use the law to target members of the violent Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, the New York Post reported, citing two sources close to the administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump campaigned on invoking the wartime law, which allows the president to detain or deport the natives and citizens of an enemy nation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
