The release on Sunday of the first photograph<\/a> of Pope\u00a0Francis since his admission to the Gemelli hospital in Rome was an uplifting moment for the world\u2019s 1.3 billion Catholics. In a message published<\/a> by\u00a0the Vatican, he said that he continued to feel \u201cfragile\u201d and was \u201cfacing a period of trial\u201d. But after battling pneumonia in both lungs for more than a month, he is now off the critical list.<\/p>\n How long the 88-year-old pontiff is able to carry on in St Peter\u2019s chair, though, is another matter. Rumours have inevitably swirled regarding a possible resignation \u2013 following the precedent<\/a> set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.
