But his achievements will need to be safeguarded in an inevitable power struggle to come<\/p>\n<p>The release on Sunday of the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/16\/pope-seen-praying-hospital-chapel-photo-released-vatican\">photograph<\/a> of Pope\u00a0Francis since his admission to the Gemelli hospital in Rome was an uplifting moment for the world\u2019s 1.3 billion Catholics. In a message <a href=\"https:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/en\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2025\/03\/16\/250316a.html\">published<\/a> by\u00a0the Vatican, he said that he continued to feel \u201cfragile\u201d and was \u201cfacing a period of trial\u201d. But after battling pneumonia in both lungs for more than a month, he is now off the critical list.<\/p>\n<p>How long the 88-year-old pontiff is able to carry on in St Peter\u2019s chair, though, is another matter. Rumours have inevitably swirled regarding a possible resignation \u2013 following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-11138577\">precedent<\/a> set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI. Though he has overcome multiple health issues to pursue an active and dynamic\u00a0papacy, a prolonged period of illness may lead\u00a0him to contemplate stepping down if he can no longer carry out a pastoral role effectively.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article?
