He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2013\/apr\/15\/42-jackie-robinson-brooklyn-dodgers-mlb\">broke Major League Baseball\u2019s color barrier<\/a> in 1947 when he suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers; he went on to be elected to his sport\u2019s Hall of Fame. Robinson also served in the US Army during the second world war.
