We start with news that president Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday aimed at reviving US shipbuilding and reducing China\u2019s grip on the global shipping industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Donald Trump<\/strong> has backed down on tariffs on most countries for 90 days, applying instead a 10% tariff, effective immediately.<\/strong> In an announcement<\/a> that made no mention of several days of market meltdown, rising US inflation fears and fears of a global recession resulting from his tariff policies, Trump insisted his decision was based on the fact that more than 75 countries had approached the US to negotiate on tariffs and non-monetary tariffs rather than retaliate (he was less diplomatic<\/a> in his description of conciliatory nations last night). Mexico<\/strong> and Canada are included in the 10% baseline tariffs<\/strong>, US treasury secretary Scott Bessent<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n Democratic governors hit back at a Trump order blocking state climate policies.<\/strong> Kathy Hochul<\/strong> and Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/strong>, the governors of New York and New Mexico respectively and who co-chair the US Climate Alliance, wrote: \u201cThe federal government cannot unilaterally strip states\u2019 independent constitutional authority.\u201d They vowed to continue \u201cadvancing solutions to the climate crisis\u201d. Last night <\/strong>Trump issued an executive order that aims to block the enforcement of state laws<\/a> passed to reduce the use of fossil fuels and combat the climate crisis. It came just hours after Trump issued orders to increase coal production<\/a>. The order named California<\/strong>, New York<\/strong> and Vermont<\/strong> as specific targets, while also listing a broad range of state policies that the administration would seek to nullify, from cap-and-trade systems to permitting rules.<\/p>\n The Trump administration intends to appeal<\/a> a judge\u2019s ruling lifting access restrictions on the<\/strong> Associated Press<\/strong>, a court filing seen by Reuters showed.
