The NMNDA is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/tech\/topics\/us-army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Army&#8217;<\/a>s Fort Huachuca military installation.<\/p>\n<p>The move allows the U.S. military to serve in a more active law enforcement role than in years past. Military personnel have typically been prevented from participating in civilian law enforcement activities such as search, seizure, or arrest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/navy-deploys-another-houthi-fighting-navy-warship-new-us-southern-border-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>NAVY DEPLOYS ANOTHER HOUTHI-FIGHTING WARSHIP TO NEW US SOUTHERN BORDER MISSION\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of their new duties, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">service members<\/a> can search and temporarily detain trespassers on the NMNDA, as well as provide medical care and implement crowd control measures, until appropriate law enforcement can take them into custody.<\/p>\n<p>Task force members can also assist with the installation of temporary barriers, signage, and fencing upon request.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through these enhanced authorities,\u00a0U.S. Northern Command will ensure those who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/immigration\/illegal-immigrants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">illegally trespass<\/a> in the New Mexico National Defense Area are handed over to Customs and Border Protection or our other law enforcement partners,&#8221; said USNORTHCOM Gen. Gregory Guillot.\u00a0&#8220;Joint Task Force-Southern Border will conduct enhanced detection and monitoring, which will include vehicle and foot patrols, rotary wing, and fixed surveillance site operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>USNORTHCOM was named as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/defense\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defense Department<\/a>&#8216;s operational lead for the employment of U.S. military forces to carry out President Donald Trump\u2019s southern border executive orders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-orders-military-control-federal-lands-southern-border\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>TRUMP ORDERS MILITARY TO TAKE CONTROL OF FEDERAL LAND AT SOUTHERN BORDER<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last week, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum visited New Mexico to announce that the Army will take control of nearly 110,000 acres of federal land along the U.S.-Mexico border as part of the Trump administration&#8217;s efforts to curb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>illegal immigration<\/u><\/a> and trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>The 109,651 acres of federal land will be transferred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/military\/army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>the Army<\/u><\/a> for three years, subject to valid existing rights.<\/p>\n<p>The switch in jurisdiction will allow the government to protect sensitive natural and cultural resources in the region, while helping the Army support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/immigration\/border-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>U.S. Border Patrol<\/u><\/a> operations in securing the border and preventing illegal immigration, according to the Department of the Interior.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Defense Department authorized the military to patrol the southern border to provide &#8220;enhanced detection and monitoring&#8221; to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any law enforcement actions to apprehend individuals suspected of illegal entry must be conducted only by non-DoD law enforcement personnel and National Guard personnel in a non-federalized status accompanying these patrols,&#8221; the DOD said at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Fox News Digital&#8217;s Alexandra Koch contributed to this report.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Military members stationed in and around portions of the southern border have been given the authority to temporarily detain and search illegal migrants.\u00a0 Service members with the Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB)\u00a0are now authorized to conduct several security measures in the New Mexico National Defense Area (NMNDA),\u00a0U.S. Northern Command said Monday.
