But they are essential to building community and long-term resistance<\/p>\n<p>Opinions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/19\/anti-trump-rallies-protests\">protests<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/05\/trump-hands-off-protest\">this<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/apr\/21\/climate-protests-trump\">month<\/a> keep oscillating between two extremes. Optimists point to the larger-than-expected numbers (larger than expected by many police departments for sure); they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/the-weekend-essay\/so-you-want-to-be-a-dissident\">enthusiastically recall<\/a> a famous social scientific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world\">finding<\/a> according to which a non-violent mobilization of 3.5% of a population can bring down a regime. Pessimists, by contrast, see protests as largely performative. Both views are simplistic: it is true that protests almost never lead to immediate policy changes \u2013 yet they are crucial for building morale and long-term movement power.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, observers had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/25\/magazine\/trump-hyperpolitics-resistance.html\">rushed to declare<\/a> resistance \u201ccringe\u201d and a form of pointless \u201chyperpolitics\u201d, a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/niall-ferguson-the-vibe-shift-goes-global-assad-putin-trump\">vibe shift<\/a>\u201d (most felt by rightwing pundits, coincidentally) supposedly gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\">Donald Trump<\/a> a clear mandate, even if he had won the election only narrowly. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/democrats\">Democrats<\/a> were flailing in the face of a rapid succession of outrageous executive orders \u2013 many of which were effectively memos to underlings, rather than laws.
