Others are realising that they can\u2019t afford not to<\/p>\n<p>Enfeebling universities or seizing control is an early chapter in the authoritarian playbook, studied eagerly by the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2019\/06\/george-soros-viktor-orban-ceu\/588070\/\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n in Hungary<\/a>. \u201cWould-be authoritarians and one-party states centrally target universities with the aim of restricting dissent,\u201d Jason Stanley, a scholar of fascism at Yale, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/article\/2024\/sep\/05\/why-fascists-hate-universities-us-bangladesh-india\">wrote <\/a>in the Guardian in September. Last month, he announced that he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/26\/yale-professor-fascism-canada\">leaving the US<\/a> for Canada because of the political climate and particularly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/audio\/2025\/apr\/24\/trump-class-war-harvard-podcast\">battle over higher education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is not merely that universities are often bastions of liberal attitudes and hotbeds for protest. They also constitute one of the critical institutions of civil society; they are a bulwark of democracy. The Trump administration is taking on judges, lawyers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/memorandum-for-the-heads-of-executive-departments-and-agencies\/\">NGOs<\/a> and the media: it would be astonishing if universities were not on the list.
