Trying to understand Donald Trump\u2019s across-the-board tariffs based solely on economic theory won\u2019t work. As the US president himself said<\/a>: \u201cChronic trade deficits are no longer merely an economic problem, they\u2019re a national emergency that threatens our security and our very way of life.\u201d That may be why, as many economists<\/a> have<\/a> pointed<\/a> out, there\u2019s simply no good economic case for his plans.<\/p>\n But few<\/a> commentators<\/a> have understood that facts and figures aren\u2019t the whole point of the tariffs.
