In 2021, JD Vance<\/a>, then a candidate for Ohio senate, gave a provocative keynote<\/a> address at the National Conservatism Conference. Vance\u2019s lecture was an indictment of American higher education: a \u201chostile institution\u201d that \u201cgives credibility to some of the most ridiculous ideas that exist in this country\u201d. The aspiring politician did not mince words before his receptive rightwing audience: \u201cIf any of us wants to do the things we want to do \u2026 We have to honestly and aggressively attack the universities.\u201d The title of Vance\u2019s keynote was inspired by a quote<\/a> from Richard Nixon: \u201cThe universities are the enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n The Maga movement, of which Vance, the vice-president, is now at the forefront, has been unabashedly on the attack against campuses, professors and students. Donald Trump<\/a> characterizes<\/a> colleges as \u201cdominated by Marxist maniacs and lunatics\u201d, and student protesters as \u201cradicals\u201d, \u201csavages\u201d and \u201cjihadists\u201d who have been indoctrinated by faculty \u201ccommunists and terrorists\u201d. He has already delivered swift vengeance against campus protesters and non-protesters alike with visa terminations and deportations.
