Carolina Valladares P\u00e9rez, a Washington-based correspondent for the government-funded international news service Voice of America, has reported from places where press freedom is severely restricted \u2013 war zones and autocratic states \u2013 in the Middle East and across Latin America. Intimidation and threats from state officials were not unusual \u2013 but she always managed to get the story out.<\/p>\n
Now for the first time in her career, Valladares P\u00e9rez says she has been silenced \u2013 not by a faraway regime, but by the government of the United States.<\/p>\n
