Independently of whether the \u00a328bn green investment programme was the right policy for the next Labour government to commit to, Rachel Reeves\u2019s reasons for ditching it were an undeserved gift to the Tories and a partial vindication of their disgraceful flirtations with an austerian, anti-green political narrative.<\/p>\n
Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today shortly after her U-turn<\/a> on Labour\u2019s headline \u00a328bn green transition programme, the shadow chancellor explained her decision by claiming that, under Jeremy Hunt, the Treasury is \u201cplanning on maxing out the credit card\u201d, adding for good effect that the Tories are \u201cmaxing out the headroom ahead of the next general election\u201d thus limiting \u201cwhat an incoming Labour government will be able to achieve\u201d.
