President Donald Trump<\/a> made a quip about Pearl Harbor Thursday when asked if Japan and other American allies were given advance notice about attacking Iran, saying the U.S. “wanted surprise.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump made the comment while sitting across from Prime Minister of Japan<\/a> Sanae Takaichi during a bilateral meeting at the White House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Japan and the U.S.\u00a0are\u00a0very good\u00a0friends, but one question, why didn’t you tell U.S.\u00a0allies in Europe and Asia, like Japan, about the war before attacking Iran?\u00a0So\u00a0we are very confused about, we Japanese citizens,” a reporter asked Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Well, one thing, you\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to signal too much,” the president responded. “You know, when we\u00a0go\u00a0in, we went in very hard, and we didn’t tell anybody about it because we wanted\u00a0surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Okay? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor? Okay?\u00a0Right?”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“You know,\u00a0he’s\u00a0asking me, \u2018Do you believe in\u00a0surprise?\u2019\u00a0I think much more so than us. And we had\u00a0to\u00a0surprise\u00a0them. And we did,” Trump continued. “And because of that surprise, we knocked out the first two\u00a0days,\u00a0we\u00a0probably knocked\u00a0out 50% of what we \u2014 and much more than we\u00a0anticipated\u00a0doing.\u00a0So,\u00a0if I go and tell everybody about it,\u00a0there’s\u00a0no longer a surprise, right?”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier in the meeting, Trump told reporters, “We’re doing this excursion. And when it’s completed, we’re going to have a much safer world. And the Prime Minister agrees with me on this.“<\/i><\/p>\n

“Iran is a serious threat<\/a> to the world, to the Middle East and to the world. And everybody agrees with me,” Trump said. “I think virtually every country agrees with me on that. So I wanted to put out that fire.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
