Last month it was the turn of the Republican party in Texas to <a href=\"https:\/\/texasgop.org\/resolution-on-the-establishment-of-additional-data-centers-in-texas\/\">express<\/a> forthright opposition to the construction of datacentres for artificial intelligence, pending adequate environmental safeguards for local communities. Across the United States, similar campaigns are being waged, as voters from across the political spectrum rail against the outsize influence and power of big tech.<\/p>\n<p>For the White House, which has made the rapid rollout of datacentres a priority in its AI action <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2025\/07\/white-house-unveils-americas-ai-action-plan\/\">plan<\/a>, the\u00a0scale of the protests is an unwelcome surprise. One\u00a0of Donald Trump\u2019s first acts on returning to office\u00a0was to authorise the deregulated \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Americas-AI-Action-Plan.pdf\">build, baby, build<\/a>\u201d approach demanded by the Silicon Valley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global\/2025\/dec\/15\/ai-trump-openai-google-data-centers\">backers<\/a> who helped to fund his campaign.
