New York city\u2019s council chamber was packed, the debate wide-ranging and heated, but lacked one component \u2013 a talking horse. Many of the 200 people packed into the debating hall last week felt only they could speak for the interests of the equine species.<\/p>\n
In one passionate camp, stable hands and drivers who attend to 160 horses that draw 68 carriages in the park, a business, they say, that has been operating since Central Park was created in 1858. On the other, a vigorous gathering of animal rights advocates who voiced that the carriage horse industry was a representation of man\u2019s broad subjugation of animals.<\/p>\n
