{"id":76366,"date":"2026-07-21T14:54:59","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T19:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news2shorts.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/21\/newsom-admin-faces-questions-over-6-2m-diaper-contract-after-touting-competitive-process\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T14:54:59","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T19:54:59","slug":"newsom-admin-faces-questions-over-6-2m-diaper-contract-after-touting-competitive-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news2shorts.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/21\/newsom-admin-faces-questions-over-6-2m-diaper-contract-after-touting-competitive-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Newsom admin faces questions over $6.2M diaper contract after touting &#8216;competitive&#8217; process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/gavin-newsom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gavin Newsom\u2019s<\/a> administration on Friday released the contract behind the state\u2019s $6.2 million diaper program after questions about the deal\u2019s noncompetitive designation and a reported delay in making the agreement public.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement with nonprofit Baby2Baby will provide families of newborns with 400 free diapers at participating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/health-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California hospitals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom said in May that the deal went through a &#8220;competitive bidding process.&#8221; However, the state\u2019s contract database lists it as &#8220;NON-COMPETITIVELY BID,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-diapergate-non-competitive-exemptions-buried-in-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS California Investigates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/conservatives-flip-script-newsom-demanded-25th-amendment-trump-propped-up-vegetable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CONSERVATIVES FLIP SCRIPT ON NEWSOM AFTER HE DEMANDED 25TH AMENDMENT FOR TRUMP: &#8216;PROPPED UP A VEGETABLE&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead of seeking formal bids, the state asked interested groups to submit information through a &#8220;Request for Information.&#8221; The document said it was &#8220;not a solicitation&#8221; and that prices submitted would not count as bids, CBS California Investigates reported.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom\u2019s office pushed back on the report, saying 15 groups responded and were reviewed based on cost and their ability to make and distribute diapers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The governor was referring to the process being competitive in nature, which remains accurate,&#8221; Newsom&#8217;s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/newsoms-office-diaper-contract-reporting-demonstrably-false-corrections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the outlet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The records reportedly did not include scoring sheets, rankings or clear evaluation standards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/acting-ag-todd-blanche-says-newsoms-doj-claims-not-grounded-fact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ACTING AG TODD BLANCHE SAYS NEWSOM&#8217;S DOJ CLAIMS ARE NOT &#8216;GROUNDED IN FACT&#8217;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Several applicants said they only learned they were no longer being considered when Newsom announced the Baby2Baby partnership, CBS California Investigates reported.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/west\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California\u2019s 2025 budget<\/a> exempted the program from normal bidding rules and other state review requirements, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>CBS California Investigates found more than two dozen similar exemptions in the state budget, covering over $1 billion in spending. About two-thirds never expire.<\/p>\n<p>The state released the contract on July 17, 66 days after the outlet filed a public records request.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s office said the extra time was needed to &#8220;grant our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/executive\/law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal team<\/a> adequate time to process and work on these requests,&#8221; according to CBS Investigates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/newsom-blasted-sheriff-his-own-backyard-california-crime-victims-cry-foul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NEWSOM BLASTED BY SHERIFF IN HIS OWN BACKYARD OVER CALIFORNIA CRIME AS VICTIMS CRY FOUL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>CBS California Investigates reported that the agreement marks at least the third time Baby2Baby has received California funding without a competitive bid.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/events\/charity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nonprofit also<\/a> has a connection to the Newsom administration. Baby2Baby co-CEO Norah Weinstein serves on the board of the California Partners Project, which was founded by first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom&#8217;s office and Baby2Baby could not immediately be reached by Fox News Digital for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Gov.
